Membership

All new members of the Knights are required to attend a beginner's class before joining. We hold beginner classes twice a year in September and February.  Our Beginner Class is a three night class running from 7:00 - 9:00 pm over three consecutive Mondays. The first night focuses on a club overview as well as instruction on 14th century clothing, armour and arms. The second night is the historical 8 and English 5 short sword movements. The third night we cover Germanic longsword movements.

The class is by pre-registry only cash, money order or cheque payable to Knights of the Northern Realm.  Price is $50 per student which includes handouts and gloves.  Students must be 18 years or older. All new students must sign a waiver.

We practice weekly and the dues are $10 per week payed the first Monday of the following month (ie. 3 practices attended in March = $30 due first Monday in April).  Membership is $50 for 12 months.

We have club weapons to use so new members only need leather gloves (mandatory).  You are welcome to buy your own rebated steel sword (i.e Paul Chen practical).  Members receive sword discounts at Supply Sergeant and Furguson’s.

Period Names:

Members are asked to adopt historical names when active in club projects.  These need to be based on their first and last name or their first name and place of birth as was done in the 14th century.  ie.  Edward of Woodstock, Sir John Holland, etc.

All members are expected to build and/or buy their own costume and/or armour in mid to late 14th century style.  Our club has a limited amount of historical kettle helms and tabards to help outfit members.

Our club has a library of books on the 14th century that members can borrow.  There is a $25 refundable deposit for library access.  Books are expected to be returned within a few weeks time.

All new members must agree to follow the club rules outlined in our handbook.  The club has the right to refuse membership.

MEN and WOMEN-AT-ARMS are members that are regularly attending practices, take our classes and pay their dues on time. While learning about medieval history, weapons and combat they can begin accumulating skills and equipment towards earning a position as Squire if so desired.

SQUIRES are advanced Men and Women-at-arms or Knights in training. They learn the martial art of medieval combat, own historical armour and learn medieval history.

KNIGHTHOOD in our club is granted not requested.

To be knighted you must be a committed and long term member in good standing, have completed the Beginner class, shown safe conduct, have a desire to learn medieval history, and have been involved with the club consistently for three or more years.

Sorry, but those with a harness of period armour or a long history with another organization cannot simply join the club and become knighted.

A minimum requirement for Knighting includes owning a suit of historically accurate armour from the Transitional era of the 14th century including:
